Content creation isn’t for the faint hearted and that’s why presenting someone’s work as yours (plagiarism) is not only a crime but also a sin as well. For the last 3 years, I have participated in a dozen of hackathons and innovation contests where I’ve learned a couple of things I’d like to share with you.

People have great ideas out there but they are afraid to share them. Someone creates a very cool prototype but keeps it for himself ostensibly to “safeguard the idea from being stolen by someone else”.Yes we have witnessed cases whereby you pitch on Friday and on Monday you see the same being advertised in mainstream media but that is not always the case. It has to be a very very unique prototype – these “big fish” don’t just fall in love with any project. In such cases, don’t just walk in and start presenting like it’s some high school drama festival. Sign a NDA(Non-disclosure agreement) before anything else.

I’ve also experienced this at first hand. Someone approaches me to develop a prototype for their idea but they’re afraid I might claim it as my own. What you need to know is, your idea is just good but not as expensive as you think. I know it sounds like a billion dollar project in your mind but it’s trash to those guys you think they’ll steal it especially if it’s just a write up or talk without anything tangible to show.Let’s assume it’s some ‘out of the box project’ . Fine, it’s a good stuff but you better understand in advance that the fact that you have a good product doesn’t mean that your target audience will be interested. I’m not a pessimist anyway but it’s the reality – ask those who have taken a new product to the market.

These are some of viability assessment parameters they look at but you don’t.Even if someone has the financial muscle or skills to “steal” your idea, trust me they won’t implement it as you because they have not done any research on it, and chances are very high that they are not experienced in that particular field as you are. So share it confidently. When you share:

  • You get recommendations to improve it
  • You get potential investors
  • You grow your networks
  • You can even get grants/donations
  • You can be shown more avenues to commercialize your project or even be shown loopholes that will lead to losses before its too late

JUST SHARE IT.
